He mentored and supported other Black journalists and technicians trying to work their way up the ladder in a White-dominated news business. Many people aren’t aware that Max was the first to reach that height in our business, and was also a founder in 1975 of the National Association of Black Journalists. I’m Don Lemon, and Max’s professional ascent to become, in 1978, the co-anchor of ABC World News Tonight on ABC News, alongside Peter Jennings and Frank Reynolds, showed me that it was possible for a Black American to become a news anchor on a major network.
Max Robinson was an inspirational figure for me when I decided to become a TV journalist and news anchor.
